In December 2022, San Francisco-based producer Kontrabandbeatz gave me an offer I couldn’t refuse: the opportunity to direct the music video for "Big Steppa," filmed entirely in Kenya. With passport in hand, I was ready to go on this adventure to Africa. However, the journey wouldn't be without its challenges...
At first, everyone had an abundance of good ideas, but there was no consolidated vision for how the music video should be. We had limited equipment, limited crew, and an undisclosed budget. To adapt to the situation, I negotiated to get the team to focus on the main narrative to arrive at some consensus, and I was able to incorporate the central progression of a rags-to-riches tale of an artist, and I was able to streamline our production by reducing the locations to just 3.
I particularly want to highlight this video because of the Reach Back™. initiative. We incorporated these children from the Kibera Slums in the music video. It was unplanned - it was desired, but unplanned, and we brought them in after the music video as they gathered around the shoot with wide eyes and excited grins. We came for the aesthetic but were grateful to have an opportunity to see the inside of the slums and what exactly the living conditions. In the following days, we returned and delivered Christmas presents and essentials like toiletries food water. That was one of the most heartwarming experiences of the trip.
